Shyamal Mukherjee
Kolkata, India

Born in 1961, Shyamal Mukherjee has spent his entire life in his hometown Kolkata. His college years were spent in Shantiniketan, where he completed his BFA in 1987, and his MFA in 1989 from the Rabindra Bharati University.

In Mukherjee’s work, we see strong figurative tradition being carried ahead and interpreted in a very contemporary style. Mukherjee loves to travel alone to new places on buses and trains. It’s not surprising that every figure in his body of works has a separate and interesting story to tell. Most of the people Mukherjee paints are performers of some kind, dressed in bright orange, red and green costumes, giving his art a quirky edge is their cartoon like faces and podgy fingers.

Mukherjee`s favourite medium is reverse oil or acrylic painting on transparent acrylic sheets. In his spare time Mukherjee loves to teach children. He also collects rural artworks and the crafts of Bengali artisans.
